Dante was born in 1265 in Florence, and died at the age of 55 on September 14, 1321. He was buried in Ravenna. His actual birthday is unknown, but some experts believe it to be between May 11 and June 11. At the age of nine, he met for the first time the eight-year-old Beatrice Portinari, who became in effect his Muse, and remained, after her death in 1290, the central inspiration for his major poems. Dante first studied in grammar, philosophy, literature, rhetoric, and theology. He learned under Brunetto Latini who influenced him greatly.
